Crime Highlights - July 2009
In July Captain Dyke was called to active military service. The
deployment created a fifth staffing reduction within the agency within
the past 24 months. Other vacancies were created by retirement, layoffs,
and extended sick leave. We had to reassign our Community
policing/school liaison officer to the road which impacted our ability
to help neighborhoods organize for National Night Out (NNO) to some
degree this year. Nevertheless we are still attempting to assist
neighborhoods as best we can.
The investigation of an identity theft and bank fraud incident has
been completed. The suspect used fraudulent identification to open bank
accounts and obtain lines of credit. Financial losses to date exceed
$18,000.00. This case consumed many investigative hours for analysis of
financial records and compilation of the necessary documents for
prosecution. As a result of the investigation the suspect was positively
identified, warrants have been authorized charging him with identity
theft and forgery. He was arrested and lodged at the Kent County Jail on
a $10,000 cash bond.
DPW employees reported another incident of vandalism to Alpine
Estates Park. Someone climbed onto the roof top of the bathroom building
and removed shingles in the shape of a letter "C". Several days after
the incident a nearby resident made contact with me and said he saw two
young men admiring their "work" and throwing shingles into the grassy
area near the pavilion. He does not know who they are and did not report
it when it was occurring. Silent Observer was contacted about reward
money. They were willing to get involved and the information went out to
the public via the news media.
An indecent exposure complaint was reported. Officers responded and
were able to locate the suspect at his residence. The victim identified
the suspect who is well known to this department for his frequent acts
of indecent exposure. A 3-count warrant was obtained for the suspect.
Our agency participated in "Operation Falcon" which was a US
Marshal’s Department "pick-up" effort of local, state and federal arrest
warrants that numerous local police agencies and the Michigan State
Police participated in. As a result of this effort a total of 400
arrests were made and 465 warrants were cleared!
