Crime Highlights - November
2009
A suicide was investigated. In this incident the victim a 24 yr old
male shot himself in the head with a 20 gauge shotgun. No suicide note
was located. The autopsy ruled that the death was a suicide manner of
death shotgun wound to the head. Investigation continues as to why the
individual committed suicide.
There was another armed robbery this month at a party store in
Standale. This robbery is related to the robbery which occurred in
October at a different party store nearby in Standale. In this case a
suspect pointed a gun at the store clerk and demanded money.
Investigation revealed the identity of the suspect, subsequently armed
robbery warrants have been issued for the suspect’s arrest. An area wide
search for the suspect is ongoing. Due to the violent nature of the
suspect’s actions many investigative resources focused on these two
cases this month. On 12-3-09 the suspect has been apprehended and facing
numerous armed robbery charges in different jurisdictions along with
Walker’s.
Acting Captain Jason Howe submitted for another Taser grant. On
11-17-09 the Department received a $1000 Taser Kit from NTOA (attached).
The Walker Police Department taught a snowmobile safety course during
the month of November. It was very well attended and taught by Officer
Jason Frank, Officer Gil Redzinski and myself. The course has received
very high praise from the State as being one of the best presentations
in the region!
We noted there was a significant drop in the number of retail fraud
arrests in November as compared to the same period last year. However
there was a definite increase this year in the number of car-deer
accidents verses the same time last year.
Dispatcher Dennis Honholt resigned in November to take a police
officer position out-of-state. His position has since been filled by
laid-off Walker Police Officer Joel Bartels.
There were numerous meetings pertaining to Kent County Central
Dispatch and Walker Dispatch during the month of November. Some were of
a technical nature; some were related to funding or operational issues
either in the City or with our municipalities.
Training:
Honor Guard Officer Sam Powell attended the funeral for the Muskegon
Heights Police Chief and Honor Guard Officer Brandyn Heugel participated
in a metro Honor Guard posting of colors for the GRCC Police Academy
Graduation. No other training scheduled in November.
Community Activities:
Numerous planning meetings for the upcoming community food drive. In
addition, members of the Department assisted Zinser Elementary and the
Intermediate schools with lock-down drills.
Volunteer Patrol:
Our volunteers logged 237 hours of volunteer hours amongst the group.
Residential Property Checks:
The Volunteer Patrol completed property checks on eleven (11)
properties during the month of October.
Directed Patrols:
Alpine Ave for panhandlers (closed 11-25-09) Numerous arrests
made.
1476 Werner is closed but we are still monitoring nightly.
Dead end of Cogswell for parking violations (closed 11-25-09) No
violations
The speed board was deployed at (19) locations.
