CITY OF WALKER
COMMISSION/STAFF MINUTES
NOVEMBER 16, 2009
Mayor Pro-Tem Holt called the meeting to order at 7:00 p.m.
Present: Commissioners: Holt Parent, Kent, Deschaine, Versluis and
Stek.
Also Present: City Manager Vander Meulen, Assistant City Manager
Schmalzel
Absent: Mayor VerHeulen
Jason Howe was present from the Police Department to show the new
Ford Explorer to the Commission. The DPW staff worked to equip this
vehicle for service.
City Manager Vander Meulen discussed with the Commission the need to
update software for the BS & A program because the company will no
longer support our current software. There is money available in the
existing budget due to frugal spending during the recent Treasurer’s
Office software update that can be used to offset the cost. There will
be no need to amend the current budget to purchase this update. There
was a consensus from the Commission to move forward.
The City Manager also followed up discussion from the previous
Commission meeting and discussed topics for the proposed retreat
tentatively scheduled for February 6, 2010.
City Manager Vander Meulen was excused at 8:10 PM.
Assistant City Manager Schmalzel distributed a copy of the new Long
Term Disability section to the Personnel Manual. This is a new section
because it was separated from the Health & Dental section it was
previously included in.
Motion by Deschaine, supported by Parent, to approve the change to
the Personnel Manual to include the new Long Term Disability section.
Motion carried unanimously.
Mayor / Commissioner Comments;
Commissioner Holt will be speaking at a Newly Elected Officials class
for the MML and asked her fellow Commissioners for their ideas on topics
she should cover.
Commissioner Parent discussed a concern from a resident regarding
hitting a deer and the Police Departments policies. Assistant City
Manager Schmalzel will look into the proper protocol.
Meeting adjourned at 8:20 p.m.
Respectfully submitted,
Shannon Bales
Deputy City Clerk
