City of Walker - New Hours of Operation

PUBLIC ANNOUNCEMENT
OPERATIONAL CHANGES COMING TO THE CITY OF WALKER
NEW HOURS OF OPERATION EFFECTIVE JANUARY 4, 2010

Like many other communities, the City of Walker is faced with rising costs and decreasing revenues. In particular, the City is experiencing significant revenue reductions in income tax as a result of the economic downturn. To make matters worse, the recent approval of the State budget for fiscal year 2011 includes a severe cut to the City’s revenue sharing payment. These are dollars used to provide our residents with critical public services.

As a result, effective January 4, 2010, City hours of operation will be changed to 7:30am to 5:30pm, Monday through Thursday. City offices will be closed on Fridays. At this time police and fire services will not be affected, however police and fire administrative and police records offices will be closed on Fridays. Walker Ice and Fitness Center hours of operation will remain the same.

Changes to the work schedule equate to an across the board 5% pay cut for employees, and is expected to save the City approximately $150,000 over the course of the next year. The City Commission will evaluate the program during budget preparations for the next fiscal year. Adjustments may be necessary to ensure orderly operations are maintained.

We trust that our residents understand the need to take this step at this time. The City of Walker is not unlike many of our residents and businesses who are struggling to work within budgetary constraints. We will continue to seek out additional expenditure reductions in the coming months to assure that the City is well positioned in the future.
