Mike Fountain hired as New Ice Director at the Walker Ice and Fitness Facility
Posted March 7, 2011

The City of Walker is pleased to announce that it has hired Mike Fountain as the new Ice Director at the Walker Ice and Fitness facility.  Mike has been part of the professional hockey community for nearly twenty years, including professional playing experience with the Carolina Hurricanes, Ottawa Senators and Vancouver Canucks.  Mike also played professional hockey in Russia and represented Canada with the Canadian National Team and the Gold Medal Spengler Cup team during that time. From 2000 to 2001, Mike was a member of the Grand Rapids Griffins.

Mike has extensive coaching experience working with numerous teams from Peewee up to the high school level both in the United States and Canada.  Mike is currently the goaltending coach of the USHL’s Muskegon Lumberjacks.

As the Ice Director, Mike will oversee the City’s Learn to Play, Learn to Skate and Cross-ice programs as well as continuing to work with the Hockey Association of West Kent (HAWK) to maintain successful in-house and travel programs.  Mike will also act as the liaison for all of the facilities ice users, and will be responsible for coordinating summer camps and programs, as well as the pro-shop operations.

City Manager Cathy Vander Meulen: “We are pleased that Mike has accepted this position.  He brings a wealth of experience, enthusiasm, and knowledge to the Walker Ice and Fitness facility.  He has a unique passion for the game of hockey and the importance of fitness in general. We welcome Mike to the City of Walker and the WIFC, and look forward to working with him”.

“I am excited that after twenty years playing the great game of hockey, I will be able to give back to a sport that has provided me with so much said Mike Fountain.  I am eager to be associated with the Walker Ice and Fitness Center.  The facilities and programming have such a great reputation, and I am proud to have the opportunity to be a part of it”.

Mike is expected to begin his new position by March 14.
